12 DIY Plumbing Tips Every Oregon Homeowner Should Know

April 10, 2025 staff No Comments

Plumbing problems can sneak up quickly—but many small issues can be prevented (or caught early) with a little proactive care. If you’re a homeowner in Linn County, here are 12 DIY plumbing tips to help you avoid costly repairs and keep things flowing smoothly.

1. Know Where Your Main Water Shut-Off Is

In an emergency, you’ll want to turn off your water fast. Locate the shut-off valve and make sure it’s easy to access.

2. Avoid Liquid Drain Cleaners

They can damage pipes over time. Try a plunger or drain snake first. If that fails, call a professional.

3. Clean Sink & Shower Drains Monthly

Use baking soda and vinegar followed by hot water to keep drains fresh and reduce buildup.

4. Install Mesh Strainers

Stop hair and food particles from going down the drain by using strainers in sinks and showers.

5. Insulate Exposed Pipes in Winter

Pipes in unheated areas (garage, basement, crawlspace) should be wrapped to prevent freezing.

6. Check for Silent Leaks

Place a few drops of food coloring in your toilet tank. If it seeps into the bowl without flushing, you have a leak.

7. Test Water Pressure

Low pressure could mean a clog or pipe issue. High pressure can strain plumbing. Use a pressure gauge to check it.

8. Flush Your Water Heater Annually

This helps remove sediment buildup that can reduce efficiency and lead to heater damage.

9. Tighten Loose Faucet Handles

A wobbly handle today can turn into a full-blown leak tomorrow. Tighten the screws before it becomes a problem.

10. Use the Right Plunger

Flat plungers are for sinks; flange plungers are for toilets. The right tool makes a big difference.

11. Turn Off Outdoor Faucets in Fall

Drain and shut off outside spigots to prevent freezing and burst pipes during Oregon winters.

12. Look Under Sinks Monthly

Check for moisture, water stains, or corrosion. Catching leaks early can prevent major water damage.
